HISTORY OF ONDO STATE JUDICIARY

The Ondo State Judiciary came into being upon the creation of Ondo State out of the old Western State of Nigeria on the 3rd day of February, 1976. Piper, Hon Justice O. Olatawura, Hon. Justice Olakunle Orojo, and Hon. Justice M. E. Ogundare all of blessed memories.

In November 1976, Hon Justice S. F. Adeloye was appointed as a Judge of the High Court of Ondo State thus becoming the first to be appointed in the State.

After the creation of Ekiti State in 1996, the courts in Ekiti came under Ekiti State Judiciary while the courts left behind have remained in Ondo State and from that modest beginning, the Ondo Sate Judiciary in its High Court formation is now made up of ten (10) Judicial Divisions namely: Akure, Owo, Ikare, Ondo, Okitipupa, Ifon, Oka, Idanre, Igbara-Oke and Ore Judicial Divisions.

There are Sixty-one (61) Magistrates sitting in the Forty-two (42) Magisterial Districts across the State and Ten Rent Tribunal Districts spread all over the State and presided over by Legal Practitioners.

In 2006 pursuant to Section 280 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Law establishing the Customary Court Appeal of Ondo State was enacted by the Ondo State House of Assembly.
